CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)

We believe that NTEC and Niagara Support Services have a responsibility to operate in a manner that is environmentally friendly, socially beneficial and economically viable. We want to be proud of our CSR performance to earn the confidence of our stakeholders and society at large, to be a good neighbour and to contribute to sustainable development.

The overarching principles and policies are used internally to guide decision making, and externally to help specify our commitment and priorities. This guiding principle was created to formalize the good practice and attitudes already inherent in our staff and share them with our stakeholders for the benefit of all.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe that the future depends on individuals, not-for-profit organizations, corporations, and governments working together responsibly to protect our environment and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed. We can improve our community through our business decisions and by working with others.

We believe that:

• Pollution prevention, bio diversity and resource conservation are key to sustainable development.

We've defined our role as:

• Conducting our business in a socially responsible and ethical manner.
• Improving the social and environmental impacts of our services and business operations.
• Encouraging and supporting our stakeholders as they lead healthy active lives and participate as stewards of the environment.
• Providing leadership in the developmental services sector and working with others to pursue collective social and environmental goals.
• Supporting human rights, individual safety and equity in all areas of our organization.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities, preventing pollution and promoting the sustainability of the natural resources upon which we depend, while providing quality services to support the individuals in our care. We are working on integrating these concepts into our business plans in the short- and long-term future. Essentially, we are striving to make all of our decisions environmentally, socially and fiscally responsible.

Business Operations

• We will demonstrate sustainable business practices and lead by example in our community and sector.
• We will consider new business streams that will contribute to a more sustainable operation, e.g., growing produce for use in Niagara.
• NSS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and governance practices by conducting business in an open, honest and ethical manner, while maintaining client confidentiality at all times.

Sustainable Consumption

• We will make efficient use of natural resources including energy, land and water, and will look for ways to minimize their use.
• We are committed to continually reducing our production of harmful pollution such as emissions from vehicles and lawnmowers.
• We will promote conscious consumption by educating our employees and other stakeholders, and encouraging them to make well informed decisions about purchasing products and services that contribute to a sustainable future.
• We will look for ethical (fair-trade) and environmentally-friendly options when sourcing products for our business.

In the Community

• We will consider our impact on the local community when making decisions.
• We aim to work with local suppliers whenever possible, thereby economically benefiting our community.
• We will create and strengthen partnerships with likeminded organizations to further our overall positive impact in our community. Additionally, we will support new and existing community initiatives that align with our beliefs and strategic priorities.
• We will encourage staff to take part in voluntary work with charitable or non-profit organizations. Staff may use up to four paid special leave days for this purpose each year.
